Like Books? You’ll Love the Book Room at the Holiday Faire

Contributed by Erica LePore

“When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes.”  – Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus

When budgeting your book expenses, keep in mind a 2010 study published in the journal Research in Social Stratification and Mobility that found a direct correlation between a child’s academic success and the number of books in the home.  The study found that children who grew up in a home with more than 500 books spent an average of three more years in school than children whose parents had only a few books.  This month you can buy food and clothes with what’s left of the book budget!

Meadowbrook Waldorf School offers several chances for you to stock up on (mostly) used books at great prices, so if book sales make your heart skip a beat, come to one or all of these events!

The first are at the Annual Used Book Pre-Sale taking place at Earth Care Farm, 89 Country Drive, Charlestown on Wednesday, November 13th from 9AM-3PM and from 6:30-9:00PM.  Admission for the daytime event is $5 and includes coffee and tea.  Admission for the evening event is $10 and includes appetizers, desserts, and wine.  It’s a place to find the best selection of this year’s Faire books at very reasonable prices.

Your next opportunities to peruse the used book room are at the Holiday Faire itself, held at Meadowbrook Waldorf School, 300 Kingstown Rd., West Kingston on Saturday, November 23rd from 6-9PM and Sunday, November 24th from 10AM to 4PM.

The books range from used Waldorf books to used books of all genres and for all ages.  New this year will be a table highlighting books by local authors, including Dr. Vint Virga’s, The Soul of All Living Creatures, What Animals Can Teach Us About Being Human and Patricia Mitchell’s, A Girl from the Hill: My Mother’s Journey from Italian Girl to American Woman. A limited number of signed copies of these select, new books will be for sale.

All used adult books are 3 for $10 and all used children’s books are 5 for $10 at every event.

Don’t miss your chance to fill your shelves for a great price and a great cause.  All proceeds go to benefit Waldorf educational programs in Rhode Island.  All the joy stays with you.

Holiday Faire Magic: Gnomes and Fairies Return to the Crystal Cave

Contributed by Kristen Morelli

Join us at the Meadowbrook Waldorf School Holiday Faire, where an Early Childhood classroom magically transforms into a Crystal Cave (formerly called the Gnome Cave).

Visit the Crystal Cave, where gnomes and fairies make their homes among the darkness of the forest. Hear the sounds of the wilderness. See miniature houses, rivers, mountains, mushrooms, birds, pumpkins, and crystals, where everything sparkles with twinkling holiday lights and magical fairy dust.

The Crystal Cave was born several years ago from the creative mind of alumni parent, Jill Buckley. It quickly became a Faire favorite among young children. We are grateful that Jill has agreed to lend her artistic talent again this year.

Children are invited to enjoy the cave alone, although younger children may prefer to be accompanied by an adult.

Don’t forget to travel quietly through the cave, so as not to disturb our little gnome and fairy friends who have come to visit. Also, travel slowly so you don’t miss any of our friends hidden in small holes throughout the forest. Make sure to say “Hello,” but don’t touch, because they are very shy.

The Crystal Cave is a popular attraction, so you might want to visit earlier or later in the day.

Featured Item at the Holiday Faire Store: Hand-Crafted Balance Boards

Contributed by Renee Kent

These unique hand made wooden balance boards were a big hit at the 2012 Holiday Faire.  Crafted by a Meadowbrook Waldorf School parent, these beautiful boards are very durable and stained a soft rainbow pastel.

For any age, regular use of a balance board improves core strength and reaction time. They can also be used to increase the difficulty of another activity, such as doing push-ups, or swinging a baseball bat.  Children simply love the physical challenge of balancing.  A limited amount of these boards will be featured in the Holiday Faire store. They sold out quickly last year, so be sure to look for them early!

Watch this video of the balance board in action!
