School History

Grade 3 (1)Meadowbrook Waldorf School was formed by a group of dedicated parents and teachers committed to bringing Waldorf education to their children and the local community. The school began as a home-based Early Childhood program. MWS was incorporated as the Meadowbrook Waldorf Association in 1979, and in 1997 it graduated its first eighth grade class.

MWS went through several cycles of expansion and contraction as it struggled to find a permanent location. In 1999, the faculty initiated a profoundly altered way of working that set the school on the path to its current stability. Consequently, the school with the support of its community purchased the 28 acre site on Rt 138, in Richmond, RI where the school now stands. The present campus opened in 2007. Looking to the future…

On July 29, 2018 after almost 12 years in our first permanent home, the building was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. [Learn more here]. Thankfully the school had insurance to cover the cost of replacing what that was lost. However, we had recognized before the fire that the building was too small for our growing community and improvements were needed to meet the needs of the children. MWS is now raising funds for the new building which will include a much needed Community Center and enhancements to the Early Childhood classrooms. We hope to return to our home site in spring of 2020.
